With a good specification and thorough costing, there is no reason why a project should go wrong, although transparency is key - between the client, architectural professional and the builder. The majority of plans produced do not have enough information and detail for a builder to accurately cost and tender on a job - getting a cost estimate ensures that the builder receives
every piece of information required, and that the client can compare quotes easily.

We learned the different way cement is packaged (bag and bulk) and also that a residential project can actually use readymix cement, which is available as a mortar as well. The exhibition is permanent and open to the public. It is a non-profit entity with the focus to serve the industry and only generate funds to sustain it. Established in 1950, the ECA(SA) represents members and their interests in the labour Relations arena and in the technical and regulatory mechanisms governing the Electrical Industry. Louis spoke to us about how the industry is regulated, how contractors and manufacturers alike are given support, training and information, and how homeowners can contact the ECA for information and advice.

We interviewed Rob Emett from Century Property Developments. Century are currently busy with the biggest residential building project in Africa, at Waterfall Estate in Midrand. Waterfall Equestrian and Waterfall Hills Mature Lifestyle Estates won a total of six awards at the prestigious CNBC International Property Awards competition in 2009. The Estate comprises an entire city, complete with shopping areas, a private hospital, schools and so much more. We spoke to Rob about Century's green building philosophy and how a house built according to their sustainable housing guidelines will have a 40% lower carbon footprint than the average residential house in Gauteng. Coupled with this, Century Property Developments has partnered with Smart Village South Africa's leading provider of next-generation solutions and services for the incorporation of a state-of-the-art, fully integrated multi-media, telecommunications and IP network into the Waterfall estates infrastructure.

K chatted to Jonathan Hall from Virtual Works about the value of web-based communities in terms of marketing businesses and creating integrated and targeted groups of people with a shared common interest. Virtual Works has created DesignMind and BuildMind, on-line communities focussing on the construction industry and offering members in-depth and targeted information services and the ability to network and communicate with each other. In addition, these two on-line communities offer a wide range of services for the man in the street wishing to contact or find out about businesses, individuals, services and offerings within the construction industry. Membership is free and affords members the opportunity to market themselves while being part of a community that shares pertinent and current industry information with each other.

Lee Gammons of Sinkoil and Karin Nieuwenhuys of RST joined the buildaid team to talk about energy saving systems, specifically water saving. Sinkoil is an agency set up to distribute RST products, which are manufactured in Germany. RST offers a number of products that efficiently save water, which in turn saves electricity (the less hot water used, the less electricity required to heat the water). A 50% saving on water relates to a 20% saving on electricity. RST's shower heads offer great water saving, without detracting from the force or feeling of the water on your skin. RST's product offering includes Water Efficient shower roses/heads, Solar water heating, Solar air conditioning and Electric heating faucet.

It is a cement and concrete information provider and an educator and trainer in concrete technology and practice. The C&CI is a market development partner with the cement and concrete industries and provides specialist consulting services on cement and concrete related issues. The C&CI's information centre is open to the public and offers over 4000 volumes of books on the use of cement and concrete, and over 45000 leaflets and pamphlets on a variety of specialisations with the use of cement and concrete.

We had the pleasure in speaking to Patrick Gordon, a man with a passion for pipes and someone who is spearheading Cobra Watertech's training initiatives. The plumbing sector is one of the largest and certainly one of the most diverse in our industry in terms of products available. Plumbing may seem to have not ventured too far in terms of technology; we seem to think turning a tap is just that. We found out there is a lot more that one needs to think about these days when specifying sanitary ware, bathroom fittings and the like. Water saving and therapeutic plumbing products are on the tip of everyoneTs tongues these days as we become more environmentally and health conscious and Cobra are at the cutting edge in terms of plumbing technology.

We had the wonderful opportunity to speak to Paul Gittons, who heads up South Africa's division of Guardian Glass, one of the worldTs largest producers of glazing products. Safety is always a very big factor for glass applications and Guardian Glass is at the forefront of glazing technologies when it comes to safety, reliability and quality. The choice and specification of glass in a residential or commercial application is key critical in terms of safety and the South African glazing industry luckily is very heavily regulated. Choices on glass are many from standard float glass to high performance glass with solar control and low emissivity properties.
