COST PLANNING

Designing within budget is a challenge on most residential projects. Buildaid can address this by introducing cost planning and a Buildaid Bill of Resources (BoR) during the design process.

How it works

A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO DESIGNING AND BUILDING WITHIN BUDGET

STAGE 1

Preliminary BoR

Send us your preliminary drawings and project information and we will compile a preliminary Bill of Resources. Buildaid will determine quantities, specifications and prices where information is incomplete.

STAGE 2

Adjusting the BoR

You can then review specifications, quantities and prices and, in consultation with Buildaid, make any necessary changes to align costs with the building budget. The design can also be modified and the BoR reprocessed.

STAGE 3

Final BoR

A final Bill of Resources is compiled and presented to be used in the tendering and building process.

Who uses Buildaid Cost Planning

Architectural professionals are Buildaid’s primary focus because they create building projects. The service and BoR assists with designing within budget and creating a reliable specification. The service is also essential during the tendering process and the documents form a reliable base of information during construction. Building contractors, owner builders and property developers sometimes find themselves in a predicament with drawings containing little information and no cost calculations. The Buildaid BoR can help solve this problem.

What is a Buildaid Bill of Resources – BoR

A Buildaid Bill of Resources (BoR) is an Excel document compiled by Buildaid that lists every resource required to build a project, including materials, labour, subcontractors and specialist installations. The BoR also forms the framework and detail for specifications.

What drawings and information does Buildaid need

It is not necessary to send Buildaid every detail. Buildaid uses tried-and-tested software and systems to create a BoR from very basic building drawings/plans. Buildaid will determine quantities, specifications and prices where information is incomplete. Example: if skirtings or window sills are not on the drawings, Buildaid assumes a specification and will measure these and include them in the BoR.

Prices and Specifications

Buildaid uses real market-related prices and uses the buildaidprice.co.za platform — a structured database of building resources, materials, labour and supplier pricing. A BoR lists all required resources, each with a specification that can be used in project planning and documentation.

Quotations from suppliers

Buildaid will source quotations from suppliers and specialists for items that are difficult to measure or price such as fenestration, roof trusses and concrete work. These quotations not only provide an accurate price but also assist with specifications.

Using the BoR for tendering

Asking a building contractor to quote (tender) from a set of drawings, often with limited information, is unrealistic. It will be guesswork, and statistics show that quoted prices in the residential building industry vary by over 50%. Presenting the contractor with a BoR makes tendering much more efficient and prevents any unknowns that could pop up during construction.

Building Types

Buildaid can compile a BoR for: • New homes of any size and complexity • Alterations and additions to homes and buildings • Medium-sized commercial and industrial buildings

How it works

How does the service work?

Stage 1 — Preliminary BoR

The architect or client sends preliminary drawings and project information to Buildaid.

Buildaid then prepares and presents a preliminary Bill of Resources, along with any quotations from suppliers.

Stage 2 — Adjusting the BoR

The architect can then review specifications, quantities and prices and, in consultation with Buildaid, make any necessary changes to align the BoR and specification with the building budget. If necessary, the design can be modified by the architect and Buildaid will reprocess the BoR accordingly.

Stage 3 — Final BoR

Once adjustments and changes have been made to the BoR, a final Bill of Resources is compiled and presented. To be used in tendering and building process.

Buildaid remains available for any advice or additional information required during the project
